The EAR Yoshino 899 is one of the most versatile and powerful integrated valve amplifiers ever produced, combining Tim de Paravicini’s classic tube design philosophy with modern power and flexibility.

The design is based on the EAR 890 power amplifier, itself derived from the earlier EAR 834, but adds a built-in preamplifier stage—making it a complete integrated solution.

Core Design & Architecture

• Push-pull Class A valve amplifier

• 70 watts per channel (4, 8 or 16 ohms)

• Uses 8 × KT90 output valves (two pairs per channel)

• Additional ECC83 and ECC85 small-signal valves

• Six-input passive preamplifier section

• Can be used as:

  • Integrated amplifier

  • Power amplifier (via direct input)

  • Mono amplifier (bridged/parallel up to 140W Class A)

A key differentiator is the passive preamp stage, which avoids adding active gain and helps preserve signal purity—quite unusual in integrated valve designs.
